In a little piece of Magic Mountain history, we discovered that the park passed on a chance for one of Six Flags' indoor Dark Knight coasters in 2008. According to an article, the park was considering the ride and had a possible area to place it in, but later turned it down. As we know, Apocalypse came the following year in 2009 which doesn't account for the family coaster (unless Apocalypse IS the coaster) that Magic Mountain said they were focusing on. Maybe it was an early concept of Roadrunner Express? It all began however, when Six Flags New England moved forward into construction of the ride without the permits even being approved which of course brought them to cancel the coaster. Either way, I like Apocalypse and I think it was a great installation, but I wouldn't have minded a whirl on the Dark Knight either. The only question that I still hold is where was this so-called possible location for the ride? Was it Psyclone's former space? Flashback's area would've been tremendous..
Since the wake of these coaster capitals, enthusiasts have tried to compare the two based on their perspective coaster line-ups. LA Times recently put the two parks head to head based on their coaster line-up. In the article, they put the coasters into different categories including identical, similar, comparable, and unrelated. Most of the identical winners I would've agreed with along with the comparable and similar categories. But the only category that didn't fit was the unrelated- putting coasters like Scream against Disaster Transport and Viper against Blue Streak and Wildcat against Canyon Blaster. I mean, Viper is a) a looping coaster and b) a steel coaster while Blue Streak is a) no inversions AND a wooden coaster. If I were to be making these calls, I would've probably went for Magic Mountain as the winner- although that's my personal preferences and biased opinion. In the end, it was deemed a tie between both parks. So tell us- Do you agree with the outcome of the LA Times match-up? What would be YOUR outcome? See la Times match-up >Most of you have probably visited the park at least once this summer? If you did, you probably noticed at least one of the three Streetmosphere acts out at the park as seen in the pictures below. Out of all three new streetmosphere acts, which one is your favorite and even your least favorite? Stilt performersBelow is some shots of the MANY new stilt performers at Magic Mountain. These were a new concept for the park for 2011, and have seemed to make a rise (no pun intended). You can see these as well as several others around the park either taking photos with guests or in some cases; startling guests as seen here > Street Drum Corp.Though the title sounds like a drumline, this trio of recycle drummers take on the punk rocker tone. Playing at a different area at almost each hour, you'll probably run into these guys at least once. Perfect 6 Acapella GroupThese five singers do know how to sing acapella and do so to some of the most current radio tunes. Depending on where you see them in the park (mostly around Movie District), you might even see the newly transformed Perfect 6 that Mr. Six drove around last year with the Fun-O-Meter. What Do You Think? Your Favorite Act of the 3?I was exploring Google Maps (and Bing Maps) recently and not Street View but aerial shots of the park instead. I found it pretty cool and if not fascinating what the satellite images shows from rare construction pictures, to unspoken filming sessions! You can get some cool shots of construction like this one taken of Tatsu's track and support in the abandoned parking lot just across from the regular lot. Here's a nice picture of Tatsu under construction from Google Maps. Though this is Bing Maps, this picture is conveniently taken while X is transforming to X2. Never got to see Psyclone like this before.. Still taken from Bing Maps, this image shows the possibility of some sort of event going on while the park is closed. The red arrow shows a mob of people gathered in front of Gotham City Backlot (DC Universe), the blue arrow points to an establishment set up in front of the arcade, and yellow points to a water truck possibly to wet the pavement to look better.. All of these hint to maybe a filming session in 2005-2006. This last one shows Tatsu construction and how it affected the area surrounding it including Revolution whivch had to be temporarily scrapped in some places like where the orange arrows point. So that was all that we got that was worthy of posting for you guys to see. There's still loads more of things to discover on these online map services. If you find any, feel free to drop us a line!
