Background
X2 originally opened as X on January 12, 2002. The coaster was painted yellow and pink and did not feature the new special effects as X2 does today. X was one of three coasters planned for 2001, but the ride suffered major technical difficulties setting the opening back 8 months. X was the first of it's kind in the world as a 4th dimensional coaster, and was also the last coaster to be designed by Arrow Dynamics before their bankruptcy. According to some, X was the company's final attempt to get back on their financial track which was unsuccessful.
In 2007, it was announced that X would be transformed into X2 and re-open in 2008 with brand new trains, special effects, and audio in the seats. The coaster was repainted with dark red track and charcoal supports, along with the addition of lighter-weight trains, on-board audio, and fog and flame throwers toward the end. It re-opened to the public May 24, 2008. Since then, X2 remains one of the most popular coasters in the park, with line waits hours long on some summer days.
